The feminine space in-between

 

This thesis is a feminine manifesto, thought through the analysis of generations of women, being daughters and mothers of knowledge, which have their role in the gender emancipation. It describes the rite of passage between the former house and the future house, wherein the social role of the woman changes radically. That is what I call the space in-between: between places, time and social roles. Where, women are in the middle of a transition, daughters of tradition, and future mothers of knowledge. Where, women are in the middle of places, daughters of a place and beginning of a transformation, a transition from being a daughter and being an active woman, who functions in society reproducing her womb. It represents the space where my design takes shape. Woman’s transition through places she inhabits, asks for tools. Tools that represent: continuity from the former house, adaption to the new place and embodiment of transition. Tools that permit to reproduce the home-space, place for action, and evolve its meanings. This project gives voice to women of my generation looking for their role in society, migrating. This video is a representation of being in-between, carrying tangible and intangible

knowledge, skills and needs within and close to my body.

 

 

 

 

The feminine space in-between MANIFESTO

 

The contexts where the woman acts in everyday life, have been changing in time and places.

In my Italian context the woman nowadays touches different contexts, from the family to the working context, from celebrations to official events, from intimate contexts to friends and love contexts. Each time, these environments bring women different tools, outfits, behaviours.

 

In the number of contexts that surround the woman now, it is visible how her role in society is changing. The idea of role is connected with the definition of gender.

 

Sex – male and female -speaks about biological differences. Gender -masculine and feminine- refers to the socially constructed set of differences between man and woman, describing the characteristics that a society or culture delineates as masculine or feminine.  Indeed gender differences are taken to be socially, culturally, and historically changing over time and place.  

 

When the role of the woman in society changes, the places that she gets in contact with also shift. For instance, the house was the place where the woman was associated with for ages, but it is not enough to define her today. Still, it does represent the first place where she get in contact with her gender. Trough the inside relation with the other women of the family and through the relation with the space of the house and the family, she prepares herself for the outside. The house thus represents the place where the woman start to “be”, where the feminine intimacy is born and where her gender starts to be developed.

 

The image of the woman changes with the change of the place. The house represents the traditions, the knowledge, the behaviours, the education that the woman gets. It represent the place where she is a daughter, where her role is in interaction with other roles. The place where the woman chooses to live, on the contrary, represent the tradition, the knowledge, the behaviours that she chooses to believe in. It represents the preparation for the future generation, it represents the personal nest, different and similar from the one of the mother.

 

It is in the ritual of passage between these two places that the social role of the woman changes radically. That is what I call the space in-between: between places, time and social roles. It is in that moment that the woman chooses her role, wanting to be a mother, or a career woman or both. This moment represents the beginning of a transformation, a creation, a preparation for the future.

 

I assume that as a woman of my generation:

I am in the middle of a transition,

I am daughter of tradition,

I am future mother of knowledge.

I am in the middle of places,

I am daughter of a place,

I am future mother of spaces.

 

Following the tradition, this moment can be associated with the ritual of the marriage, where the woman starts to share her life with a man to build up her own family. For many, this was the first time that the woman left the old house. Related to that important moment of life, the family supports this migration. The father would gave her his benediction, the mother and the other women would design and prepare the necessary tools to start the new life. These tools were made observing the domestic woman role following the tradition in materials, techniques, colours, shapes were related to the social class and the place.  These tools were composing the trousseau. The Trousseau is an extension given to a woman by her family. Intangible, made by knowledge, and tangible, made by objects. Traditionally, the Trousseau  embodies the role of the woman, moreover Today, it embodies the layered composition of the woman’s roles.

 

Today women leave the house for much more other reasons, like to build a new independence not just related with the idea of marrying or being a mother. The departure it is now a personal choice and a personal adventure.  It is in this big change that the family provide in different way support to the young women and it is in a different way that they provide tools to the woman. The family still provide to the woman her action-space.

 

Space that I call space in-between that  is tangible and intangible. It can be a room in a city, or a studio in another country, or the time to look for those. But in this space the woman recreates from what she has absorbed in time for the first time. In this space full of content and bare of facilities she reproduces, imitates, and manipulates the space to start acting. Space becomes a container of herself and what she

brought, a space which represents a temporary transition, a preparation , an education, an emancipation.

 

As a designer and a woman in transition, I would like provide my future generation  with a renew trousseau composed by tools that are developed from tradition and adapted to nowadays; wearable

tools that follow the change of the women in society; tools to be used in this ‘Space Between’. Those tools will prepare her for coming moments of transformation and will made the image of a feminine transition.  They are designed to explore, for instance, the home-place in another context. They could serve as a preparation to invade, occupy and transform spaces.  Those tools will design the passage from the initiating ritual of marriage towards a collective temporary procession, a social procession that moves within places in public. A public procession from inside to the outside signs the outside emancipation, the public need of a feminine space. It is a mirror of the migrating woman looking for her social roles. This procession should be accessible to others and visible in the public.

 

In the new place, the home becomes what a woman carries – body and objects. As a renewed Trousseau, the family should give her tools to build her position. A woman doesn’t need to learn

behaviors or values, those she already received in her education. She needs a tool-space to act them out

and to transform them from being intimate to social.
